“Do you believe that Moses wrote all of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the bible)?” the lecturer asked. Most of us nodded. “Okay, turn your Bibles to Numbers 12:3. What does the verse say?” Many in the class burst out laughing. The verse read, “Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.” “Do you really believe that Moses would actually write that he was the ‘more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.’ And if he did, would he really be the most humble man?” asked the lecturer.
The second aspect of perfecting grace that Wesley espoused was that “Christian perfection does not make a superior Christian.”94 Harper continues, “Wesley rejected any idea of a status system among believers.”95 Wesley writes in his “Brief Thoughts on Christian Perfection,” “By perfection I mean the humble, gentle, patient love of God, and our neighbour, ruling our tempers, words, and actions.”96 We can thus learn that anyone who experienced Christian perfection would be filled with humility instead of entertaining ideas of being superior to another. Harper concludes, “As with everything else in the Christian faith, the experience of Christian perfection is of grace, not of works lest anyone should boast.”97
