The Epidemic of Sin 罪的感染

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world,

and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men,

A simple sneeze. An innocuous cough. A young woman who has been

on holiday in Guangzhou, China, in February 2003, set off one of the

biggest medical emergencies in Singapore: Severe acute respiratory

syndrome (SARS).2 The virus quickly spread through the population

infecting 238 and resulting in 33 deaths in Singapore.3

For Wesley, sin was like SARS, a disease that has “spread itself over

the whole man leaving no part uninfected.”4 Harper reflects this in

noting, “Sin has struck at the root of what it means to be human.”5 But

sin is not only total in each individual, it is universal, infecting all of
